How To Escape An Awkward Conversation
We've all found ourselves trapped in a conversation that feels like it's going nowhere, whether it's a stranger rambling on about their problems or a co-worker complaining for the hundredth time. How do you exit gracefully?
Computer science offers a surprising solution: exponential backoff. Here's how it works:
- Make an excuse to physically leave the conversation.
- If the conversation resumes when you get back, wait twice as long before your next exit.
- If it still continues, double your exit interval or distance moved yet again. And so on, until you're able to make a clean getaway.
Exponential backoff is how computer networks elegantly handle "collision" - when data from two sources arrives at the same time. Rather than keeping both senders transmitting (and colliding) indefinitely, exponential backoff has each one wait a little bit longer before retrying.
The same works socially. By absenting yourself for longer and longer intervals, or moving further and further out of range, you open up ever-larger windows for the conversation to naturally dissipate.

Like the legs, the torso is controlled more by the limbic brain than the thinking brain, making it an honest source of nonverbal cues. The torso houses vital organs, so the limbic brain instinctively shields it in threatening situations by:

- Hunching the shoulders to protect the neck

Voss explained to him why this was bad, and Brandon would say "You're right" but then go right back to the bad behavior. "You're right" was not real agreement, just a way to end the conversation.
So Voss tried another approach - he summarized and labeled Brandon's worldview, saying "You seem to think it's unmanly to dodge a block." Brandon thought about it and said "That's right." This was a breakthrough - Brandon now saw the real reason for his behavior and was able to change it.
